New Orleans homeowners, it's time to gear up! The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program (LFHP) is opening up another round of grants, and this could be your chance to strengthen your home against those wild Gulf Coast storms. Registration kicks off at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, September 18, and wraps up at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 20.
This time, it’s not about being the first to the finish line—the LFHP is using a lottery system, so everyone has an equal shot at snagging one of these valuable grants. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your roof, now’s the time to throw your hat in the ring.
Winning the lottery could land you up to $10,000 to upgrade your roof to the FORTIFIED Roof Standard, which is all about making your home tougher against the wind and rain we know too well here in New Orleans.
Before you dive into the registration, make sure you’ve got all your ducks in a row. You’ll need proof of a homestead exemption, an active homeowners insurance policy with wind coverage, and flood insurance if you’re in a designated flood zone. Plus, your home needs to be in good repair to qualify for the grant.
Important: Don’t start talking to contractors or kicking off any work until you get the green light from the LFHP. This program is only for primary residences, so vacation homes and condos are out of the running.
Even if you don’t get selected this time, don’t sweat it—the LFHP is thinking about opening up future grant rounds to more people, and there might be special consideration for those with lower incomes. Stay tuned for more opportunities down the road.
Living in New Orleans, we all know how crucial it is to have a sturdy, storm-ready home. With over 1,300 FORTIFIED roof grants already helping homeowners across the state, this program is making waves. Commissioner Tim Temple believes the switch to a lottery system will level the playing field for everyone who’s ready to apply.
